What is Aquaculture?

Aquaculture, or aquafarming, is the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and plantsAquaculture involves cultivating freshwater and saltwater populations under controlled conditions, as opposed to commercial fishing. Particular kinds of aquaculture include fish farming, oyster farming, algaculture, and shrimp farming.

Understand the Use of Probiotics in Aquaculture

There is an urgent need in aquaculture to develop microbial control strategies, since disease outbreaks are recognized as important constraints to aquaculture production and trade and since the development of antibiotic resistance has become a matter of growing concern. One of the alternatives to antimicrobials in disease control is the use of probiotic bacteria as microbial control agents.

1. Fish Health

By adding pro-biotic microbial to the water, an effect on the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is realized  .Disease resistance is gained. By introducing beneficial bacteria, pathogens that attempt to colonize the gut have less food source, and by exclusion, are reduced or eliminated..

2. Water Treatment

By eliminating fish wastes, rotting vegetation, etc. , the fish are raised in a clean, healthy environment.  Off -tastes can be eliminated.

3. Lower Costs

Food conversion rate (FCR) is reduced. Beneficial bacteria in the GIT has been associated with improved digestion .  Improved production efficiency and reduced disease, can mitigate any costs associated with the purchase of probiotics.  Elimination of  antibiotic , or copper sulfate use is possible.

4. Increased Production

By raising crops in a healthier environment, mortality rates are reduced. Stress levels are lowered. Crop cycles may also  be reduced, and densities may be increased.
